Coronavirus: Don’t flush! Local plumbers say stop sending TP substitutes down the drain

Fears over the Coronavirus led to a ‘panic buying’ frenzy for toilet paper, which has had a ripple effect making its way all the way to our sewers.

Local plumbers like Layne Skidmore are urging residents to refrain from flushing any toilet paper substitutes.

“We see flushable on the packaging all the time, but it doesn’t mean it’s going to want to flush down your sewer properly. Baby wipes and paper towels are thicker. They like to unfold and adhere to the inside of the pipe.”

In the video above, News Center 7’s Katy Anderson tests this, proving Skidmore’s point. The wipe does not dissolve.

Skidore reports that his team has responded to a high number of drain stoppages and sewer calls because of residents flushing their substitutes.

You can help reduce plumbers’ need to make unnecessary house calls that violate social distancing, simply by using your waist bin.
