UPDATE @ 10:40 p.m.: The 68-year-old bicyclist struck and killed this afternoon while riding his bike at Grafton and Homewood avenues was identified tonight as James Schneider of Dayton, according to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office. His preliminary cause of death was not released.

UPDATE @ 5:45 p.m.:

Residents said the bicyclist killed this afternoon would ride his bike every day around 3 p.m. in the city’s Five Oaks neighborhood.

“I was upstairs and I heard a crash and I looked out the window and saw a man laying in the street there,” said Pamela Smith, who immediately dialed 9-1-1. She said the 68-year-old victim struck and killed at the intersection of Grafton and Homewood avenues “had a helmet on, but it was broke up … I didn’t see the bike until a little bit later, which was underneath the front of her car.”

The driver was not hurt and was cooperating, police said. While this crash remains under investigation, residents said they know the streets are unsafe, including speeding and people running stop signs.

“Cars, they’re outrageous. I call the police all the time, other people call the police,” said resident Dianna Hill.

She went to the city of Dayton last year and petitioned for signatures on her street to get speed bumps added.

“Everybody was for it, they signed the petition, but they didn’t send the ballot back in so it didn’t pass,” she said.

This year, Hill said she’ll try again.

“I hate that this happened,” Hill said of the bicyclist’s death. “They should come in and say we need speed bumps and we’re going to put them here whether you want them or not.”

The victim’s name has not yet been released.
