Crash re-routes procession for Eldora Speedway founder

A 47-year-old Tipp City man was listed in serious condition tonight at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.

Brian Sutton was taken by CareFlight to the hospital this morning after his pickup overturned in a crash at state Routes 705 and 118.

The crash re-routed the funeral procession for Earl Baltes, founder of the Eldora Speedway.

UPDATE @ 1:20 p.m.

A 2011 Honda Fit, driven by 47-year-old Brian Sutton of Tipp City, was traveling east on 705 and failed to stop at Ohio 118, according to a release from the Darke County Sheriff’s Office.

Sutton’s vehicle was struck by a northbound 2014 Ford F-150, driven by 54-year-old Michael Lundvall, of Versailles, according to the release

The pickup truck overturned on impact and rolled. Lundvall was treated at the scene but refused to be taken to the hospital, according to the release.

Sutton was seriously injured and taken to Miami Valley Hospital by Careflight.

The crash blocked the intersection as the funeral procession got underway for Earl Baltes, the founder and longtime promoter of Eldora Speedway.

The procession was re-routed around to get to St. Bernard Catholic Church in Burkettsville, where the service was held.

FIRST REPORT

One person was taken by Careflight from a crash at Routes 705 and 118 near Burkettsville in Darke County.

Crews encountered heavy damages to two vehicles that collided at that intersection, which sits just north of the Eldora Speedway.

Crews were called to the scene around 9:50 a.m. Careflight left the scene with one patient on board about 45 minutes later.

The intersection remained blocked as fire and rescue personnel worked to clear the roadway and assist others at the scene.
