Body found in driveway ruled a suspicious death

PIQUA — The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has determined that a 46-year-old Piqua man who was found unconscious in the driveway of his neighbor’s home did not die of natural causes, according to Ken Betz, director of the coroner’s office.

“Based on our finding, we are treating this as a suspicious death,” Betz said Tuesday, Aug. 17.

This ruling is pending the outcome of the investigation of the Miami County Sheriff’s Office into the death of Kenneth Shoffner of Fisk Street.

Shoffner was found on the ground in the driveway of 2340 Hemm Road early Saturday morning after a disturbance that resulted in a group of people fleeing the address in a 2004 Jeep Liberty, according to Capt. Dave Duchak.

There was no indication at the scene that Shoffner had been shot or stabbed, Duchak said.

“I think there was a lot of commotion and a lot of panic,” he said.

Sheriff deputies have not determined if Shoffner was apart of the disturbance, or if he was just checking on the commotion in the area. Shoffner’s house is less than a mile from the Hemm Road house.

What deputies have determined is that the disturbance involved a man who lived at the Hemm Road address, the adult daughter of his live-in girlfriend and some of her friends, .

Deputies believed the daughter arrived at the Hemm Road address sometime around 12:30 a.m. Saturday with at least four friends. The daughter lives at the address and was attempting to retrieve some of her personal belongings. Apparently, her mother and the mother’s boyfriend who lives at the Hemm Road address got into an argument. The daughter later told police she didn’t feel comfortable staying in the home while her mother was away.

Even though the adult daughter lives at the address, deputies believe she did not have a key to the house. She told deputies she tried to contact her mother’s boyfriend about coming to the house to retrieve her belongings, but claims the boyfriend didn’t return her text messages and phone calls. That’s when she decided to go to the home with some of her friends. One of her male friends tried to enter the house through an unlocked window. That’s when the homeowner woke up and pushed him back out of the window, Duchak said.

The homeowner then went outside to confront the man who tried to enter through the window. That’s when the two males got into an altercation. Shortly after the altercation, the daughter of the live-in girlfriend and her friends fled the scene in the Jeep. Deputies believe also one person fled on foot, but was later picked up by the group in the Jeep.

The homeowner told police he walked down his driveway, and that’s when he found Shoffner on the ground.

Someone called 911, and Shoffner was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he later died at 4:20 p.m., according to Duchak and the Montgomery County Coroner’s office.

Deputies sent out an alert on the Jeep and Troy police were able to locate it as while it traveled on County Road 25A, coming into Troy, Duchak said.

The adult daughter was among the occupants. All the people inside the Jeep are cooperating with the investigation, Duchak said, though “there is some conflictions in some of the statements.”

Law enforcement officials obtained a search warrant for the Jeep, which was seized and taken to the county’s impound lot.

Deputies have not determined why Shoffner was outside, what resulted in him being on the ground or if he came in contact with the group in the Jeep.

Deputies know who was driving the Jeep at the time it left the Hemm Road address. Duchak would not immediately disclose the driver’s name or the names of the other people involved in the case.

He said the death remains under investigation and no charges have been filed in the incident.
