A man is in the Clark County Jail after he allegedly took Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers on a chase that topped 150 mph on I-70 and ended in three vehicles crashing, including one that flipped over.

Gavin Haynes, 38, faces 11 charges, including aggravated vehicular assault, receiving stolen property, fleeing and eluding, obstructing official business, escape and resisting arrest. He’s on parole after an early release from the Madison Correctional Institution on Nov. 1

He pleaded not guilty to the charges in Clark County Municipal Court on Wednesday and his bond was set at $36,000.

State troopers allegedly began chasing Haynes, driving a Mercedes-Benz, when he drove past a trooper on I-70 West at more than 100 miles per hour, according to an affidavit.

The trooper followed, the affidavit says, and caught up to Haynes after several minutes. However the Mercedes-Benz allegedly didn’t stop, according to the affidavit, and reportedly side-swiped a Kia SUV. The chase continued, the affidavit says.

“The suspect vehicle changed from the left lane to the center lane and attempted to squeeze through traffic again,” the affidavit says. “The suspect vehicle struck a white Mazda SUV in the right rear, pushing her off the left side of the roadway and into a guardrail. The suspect vehicle bounds off the Mazda and side-swiped a white Toyota Camry.”

The Mazda bounced off the guardrail, overturned and came to a rest facing southbound in the center lane, the affidavit says.

Troopers stopped to check on the people hit, the affidavit says, and only one driver had minor injuries.

Troopers found the car Haynes was allegedly driving crashed about a quarter-mile down the road, according to the affidavit. The suspect had fled the scene, sparking a manhunt. The state patrol called out its helicopter to assist in the search, as well as Springfield Police and Clark County deputies.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office received a call soon after, alerting them that a man was running through a yard.

“At (8:28 p.m.) officers … located the suspect hiding under a blanket in a barn at Leffel Lane,” the affidavit says.

After he was arrested, Haynes was transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center emergency room, according to the affidavit.

About 9:30 p.m. he allegedly attempted to flee the hospital, ripping out his IV and heart rate monitors, according to a police report.

He then ran down the hallway and pushed others out of the way, it said. A state trooper then deployed his Taser, dropping Haynes to the ground.

Haynes allegedly wouldn’t put his hands behind his back and three troopers had to restrain him in a hospital bed. Haynes allegedly remained abusive toward employees and was never able to be evaluated, the report says.

He was eventually transferred to Miami Valley Hospital, the report says.

The incident began in London, where authorities alleged Haynes was involved in a domestic violence altercation, according to the affidavit.

“During the incident, the suspect took his father’s car, rammed a garage door and fled the scene,” the affidavit says.

London police pursued the car, according to the affidavit, but terminated the chase shortly after.
