Check-cashing suspect caught in Chicago

XENIA — Chicago-area police have located Dwayne Mays Jr., one of the two alleged ringleaders in an elaborate check-cashing scheme that involved people once enrolled at Wilberforce and Central State universities.

Xenia police Capt. Scott Anger said Wednesday, May 5 that police located Mays, 21, in the Chicago area Monday night.

“He’ll be held there until a Rule 4 hearing to decide when he’ll be extradited back,” Anger said. “All but two (suspects) have been contacted or arrested.”

Anger said Colbert Johnson, also 21 and who police believe to be the operation’s other key figure, is still at large. All the other lower-level suspects except Mark Thorpe Jr. have been contacted by Xenia police.

The 10-person scam ran up losses of up to $70,000 to banks in Ohio and Illinois, including at least $45,000 at Xenia’s Wright-Patt Credit Union.

The criminal enterprise involved people cashing bogus checks and withdrawing as much as $8,000 before the checks cleared.

Both Johnson and Mays are facing five felony counts apiece, with Johnson’s most serious being a second-degree charge. Mays’ most serious charges include conspiracy, felony to grand theft and receiving stolen property.

“We’re just getting them all rounded up,” Anger said. “I’d say we’ve made great progress since last Friday when we started.”
