Cook at Springfield Children's Center charged with child rape

A man who worked as a cook in Springfield's Children's Center has been arrested on two counts of rape in Greene County, according to court records and the center's human resources director.

Leland R. Rodgers, 39, was arrested Monday night in Miami Twp. by a Greene County Sheriff's Office officer. Xenia Municipal Court records show Rodgers was charged with two counts of felony forcible rape from an alleged Aug. 1 incident.

"We were informed this morning that he was arrested (for) juvenile rape," said Sharon Baber, the center's director of HR. "He is no longer employed here. He was terminated immediately."

Baber said the alleged victim had nothing to do with the Springfield Center, which cares for children from 6 weeks old to 5 years old. Baber said a detective told her that the alleged victim is an adolescent. "In his position, he would have never been left alone with children," she said.

The center called the parents of the 68 children served at the center to let them know about the arrest and that nothing in Rodgers' background check would have indicated the alleged activity.

"We are very concerned about the child this happened to," Baber said. "Our staff (of 20) are very worked up about it as well."

Rodgers is being held in the Greene County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
