The officers were honored during a luncheon set Thursday afternoon in Columbus.
The six officers are:
- Sgt. William C. Knight, sworn in Feb. 14, 1997
- Officer Brian Rolfes, sworn in April 8, 2016
- Officer Jeremy Campbell, sworn in Aug. 5, 2016
- Officer Vincent Carter, sworn in April 8, 2016
- Officer Ryan Nabel, sworn in April 8, 2016
- Officer David Denlinger, sworn in April 8, 2016
Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. nominated the officers for the award.
“The brave, quick response of these six officers put an abrupt end to the gunman’s shooting, saving countless other lives in the process,” Heck wrote in his nomination letter. “I believe it is clear these officers deserve, and I nominate these officers to be recognized and honored for their actions.”

In the early morning hours of Aug. 4, the mass shooter started shooting people as he walked down East Fifth Street in the Oregon District. About 30 seconds after the shooting started, the six officers fatally shot him as he was attempting to enter Ned Peppers bar.
Nine people, including the shooter’s sister, died, and 27 were injured.
