A 32-year-old Detroit man found sleeping in a U-Haul with its engine running at a Miami County gas pump will spend nearly two years in prison for counterfeiting credit cards.

Aaron Deshawn Johnson, 32, and a second man, 22-year-old Timothy Banks, re-encoded gift cards with stolen credit card account numbers, according to a release from the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio.

Johnson rented a van in Rochester, Michigan, for what was supposed to be a one-day rental. Instead, he drove it more than 8,000 miles until he was caught nearly a month later at a Speedway gas station.

Fearing they overdosed in the van, officers found Banks asleep behind the wheel and Johnson on an inflatable mattress in the rear compartment of the van, the release stated.

Officers also found a credit card reader/encoder, 12 counterfeit credit cards, 41 re-encoded gift cards, 54 credit card account numbers as well as $100 in Target gift cards and $365 in iTunes gift cards.

Johnson and Banks pleaded guilty in February 2019 to conspiring to use counterfeit access devices. Banks was sentenced earlier this year to probation with home confinement.
