Formal charges filed in stabbing at Van Atta Park

A 20-year-old man arrested after police said he assaulted his friend, stabbing him more than 30 times, now stands formally charged on three counts of felonious assault.

A Montgomery County grand jury handed up its indictment against Genesis Rivera this week, according to the county prosecutor’s office.

Butler Twp. police arrested Rivera on Aug. 10 at a Poe Avenue hotel on suspicion of attempted murder. Police said Rivera stabbed a man more than 30 times at Art Van Atta Park the week before.

Rivera and the victim had stolen a bottle of liquor from a Walmart before deciding to hang out by the fishing pond at the park. The two got into an altercation and Rivera stabbed the other man.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was recovering at home at the time of Rivera’s arrest.
