UPDATE @ 1:24 p.m.:
Former Springboro Police Lt. Jim Barton has posted bond and was released from jail around 1:20 p.m.
EARLIER REPORT
A judge has set bond for former Springboro Police Lt. Jim Barton at $350,000.
Judge Michael Gilb set the bond Thursday, three days after a hearing on the issue in Warren County Common Pleas Court.
Barton was being held in the Warren County Jail until the judge’s decision on the bond. It was unclear whether he would immediately post the bond, roughly seven times what he posted to secure his freedom in 2004, while awaiting trial.
Barton is awaiting retrial on charges accusing him of hiring those responsible for his wife’s rape and murder in 1995.
Barton’s conviction was overturned last May by the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, based on a finding of prosecutorial misconduct and questions about the testimony of witness Gary Henson, who alleged one of the murderers told him of the crime before committing suicide.
Barton was alleged to have hired those responsible for the rape and murder of his wife, Vickie Barton, in a botched burglary in 1995. He was indicted in 2004 following a cold-case investigation and convicted in 2005.
He was convicted of aggravated burglary and involuntary manslaughter in connection with his wife’s death. He maintained his innocence and was supported at trial by Vickie Barton’s mother.
