UPDATE @ 11:55 p.m. (July 15)
A Dayton man was indicted today for escaping from the Montgomery County Jail.
Aaron Moore, 45, was indicted on a felony escape charge by a Montgomery County grand jury. He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday morning, according to online court documents.
Surveillance video shows he left the jail the morning of July 5 while he was waiting to be booked on a misdemeanor assault charge. He was caught later in the morning by Dayton police, hiding in a closet of his home in the 4300 block of Crestwood Avenue in Dayton, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
EARLIER REPORT
A booking sergeant at the jail, 330 W. Second St., became aware at 8:25 a.m. July 5 of a missing inmate, later identified as Aaron Moore. That sergeant notified the assistant jail commander at 8:29 a.m., according to a report from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
The facility was put on lock down and an emergency count ordered.
Jail staff reviewed video surveillance to determine Moore had in fact escaped at 5:10 a.m. July 5.
Dayton police later found him at 10:15 a.m. July 5 inside a home in the 4300 block of Crestwood Avenue in Dayton. He was found hiding in a closet and taken back to jail.
Surveillance video shows from approximately 2:55 a.m. to 5:10 a.m. July 5, Moore reportedly tampering with a security door that divides the post-book and dress-in areas.
At 4:21 a.m. and 4:23 a.m. July 5, Moore is recorded entering the jail medic’s office and rummaging through drawers and a medical bag, according to the report.
Moore later admitted to police he stole a pair of hemostats from the jail medic’s office that he used to defeat the door lock, according to the report.
At 5:10 a.m. — after 16 attempts — Moore defeated the security lock, according to the report. He also made more than 30 trips to the restroom during this time, the report states.
Moore is seen walking through the dress-in hallway to a main vestibule next to security control. He then proceeded to the main exit, according to the report.
Moore stood at the door for about two seconds, and at 5:10 a.m. the security door opened and he went through. At 5:11 a.m., another door opened and Moore left the secured part of the jail and went down a main hallway toward the lobby, according to the report.
The sheriff’s report states that staff let Moore out after he walked up to the exit door. He then left through a handicap access door at 5:11 a.m. and headed east on West Second Street.
The sheriff’s office has consulted with the prosecutor’s office that this is a fifth-degree felony charge.
