A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 14.
Police responded to the 400 block Briarwood Avenue just before 11 a.m. Friday on a weapons complaint, said Dayton Police Maj. Christopher Malson.
When officers attempted to take him into custody, Lewis pulled a weapon and fired twice at police, but officers did not return fire, Malson said.
Lewis then took a woman and two boys as hostages, prompting the SWAT response.
The woman is the mother of both boys and Lewis is the father of one of the boys. It’s not clear if they lived in the apartment or were visiting.

SWAT eventually forced their way into the apartment to rescue the hostages after an “incident” happened, police said.
Police did not give details about the “incident” but said the situation had escalated to the point they believed the hostages were in imminent danger.
Lewis and the hostages were rescued without injury, Malson said.
