UPDATE @ 3:45 p.m. (March 21)

A Montgomery County grand jury has indicted two men in connection with a March 9 shooting outside apartments on Summit Square Drive.

Lamar Lee, 20, and Quantel S. Kelly were both indicted on charges of felonious assault; improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle; and having weapons under disability.

Kelly is not in jail but a warrant has been issued for his arrest. He has an April 5 court date.

Lee has been in Montgomery County Jail since March 12. He was shot in the back in the incident, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Lee and Kelly are accused of firing shots from a vehicle toward a person outside an apartment. That victim reportedly ran inside and retrieved a gun to fire back with.

Lee will be arraigned March 24 in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court.

EARLIER REPORT (March 9)

Police have no idea about what prompted the shooting at a Dayton apartment complex, but they are searching for a gray Toyota Prius believed to have dropped the victim off at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton Lt. Mark Ponichtera said.

Homicide investigators have found multiple shell casings and evidence that a Dumpster and one of the buildings in the complex, on Summit Square Drive, were hit by gunfire, he said. Police did receive several reports of shots fired at the complex and in the area.

The victim, identified only as a male in his early 20s, was in surgery, the lieutenant said. No other injuries have been reported.

“Obviously, bullets were flying here so we want to make sure people here are safe,” Ponichtera said.

The investigation began about 9 p.m., when a man suffering from a gunshot wound was brought to the hospital by private conveyance. He told police two males confronted him in the parking lot outside Nabali’s Friendly IGA, in the 2200 block of North Gettysburg Avenue, and shot him in the stomach.

Ponichtera said investigators are confident the shooting occurred at the complex because they found “absolutely nothing to indicate that a shooting had taken place there” outside the grocery store.
