Surprised to find the “do not disturb” sign on his room’s unexpectedly deadbolted door, a permanent resident of the Dayton Motor Motel sought the help of his innkeeper Friday night to see just who was inside.

After prying the door open with a universal key, the pair told Dayton police they found a man passed out on the bed with pants around his ankles, lying on his back wearing a “U-Haul” jacket as pornography played on the in-room television.

Police said they later identified the accused interloper as 46-year-old Melvin Lee Boyd III, who they arrested on suspicion of felony burglary, misdemeanor criminal trespassing and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

The incident Friday was not the first time Boyd was trespassed from the motel at 1639 N. Keowee St., police said. On Jan. 5, the man was “found hiding in the bathroom of Room 31 at the Dayton Motor Hotel” while trying to get warm.

As he told police the “U-Haul” jacket was his and not Boyd’s, the room’s guest discovered his Samsung Blu-ray player was missing. The guest “also found a can of malt liquor inside of the residence that he stated was not his,” police said.

Police made discoveries, too, locating what they said appeared to be a small, silver pipe with burn marks in Boyd’s right front pants pocket.

Boyd was transported to Montgomery County Jail without incident. He remained in custody as of Saturday morning and is scheduled to appear Monday in Dayton Municipal court, according to jail records.
