According to New Castle police, Burke refused to stop when officers arrived and attempted to flee on a bicycle.
Officers then released a police K-9 that apprehended Burke just before he pulled out a handgun and fired a close-range shot into an officer's chest.

The injured officer then shot Burke who was later pronounced dead at Henry Community Health Hospital.
Police said the injured officer, wearing a protective vest, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at the same hospital. His identity has yet to be released.
