Piqua officer shoots, kills dog

A police officer shot a dog early Sunday while responding to a domestic dispute.

A caller told dispatchers around 1:15 a.m. that a man had assaulted a woman in the 1000 block of Jill Court in Piqua.

The responding officer said an aggressive dog charged as he was investigating. The officer fatally shot the dog.

However, a man involved in the dispute said his dog never lunged at the officer. Owner Joe Weigel said the dog was on a chain, and that after talking with the officer the man went to take the dog inside. The dog's collar came off and the dog went around the side of the house toward the officer.

The man said his dog never attacked the officer, but the officer immediately pulled his gun. He told the officer not to shoot and he'd take the dog inside, but the man clains the officer still fire two shots, killing his pit bull, Dozer.

The Piqua Police Department investigated and said the situation is unfortunate, but the officer followed "police department policies." Police Chief Bruce Jamison calls the situation "unfortunate."
