Wood Glen employees “deeply regret what has transpired at our facility,” according to a statement issued Friday afternoon.
A cause of death has not been determined, the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office said.
Representatives from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and from the Ohio Department of Health are also involved in the case, said Miami Twp. Sgt. Jay Phares.
He said police responded Oct. 6 to Sycamore Medical Center, where Winfield was taken a day after being injured.
“We’re still trying decipher” if someone inflicted injuries on Winfield, Phares said.
“We’ve gathered evidence from the scene and we’ve spoken with people about this – witnesses and people of interest,” he said. “Our detective section is working with the other agencies….It’s going to be thorough – our investigation. We’re not going to rush into anything.”
Wood Glen management issued the following statement:
“The management and staff at Wood Glen deeply regret what has transpired at our facility. We are cooperating with law enforcement authorities who are conducting a thorough investigation. At this time, we can provide no additional information due to the ongoing investigation by our local law enforcement authorities. Wood Glen will continue its history of delivering the highest quality of care to the residents of our community.”
Wood Glen is part of the CommuniCare Family of Companies, which was founded in 1984, according to its website. The facility at 3800 Summit Glen Drive has had its license since June 1988, according to the state health department.
The ODH investigates complaints, received either from consumers or nursing homes, that allege violations of abuse, neglect and/or misappropriation, according to Melanie Amato, public information officer. However, Ohio law does not permit the state health department to comment on situations involving specific nursing home residents, she stated in an email.
Winfield was a veteran on the U.S. Army and was retired from Machine Products Incorporated, where he worked for 35 years. A funeral is set for 4 p.m. Sunday at Westbrock Funeral Home, 5980 Bigger Road. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 Sunday at the funeral home.
