Propane tank thefts reported at two Dayton stores

More than 20 propane tanks were stolen from two East Third Street businesses Monday, according to Dayton police reports.

In both cases the locks on the stores’ propane cages were damaged.

A worker at a Family Dollar in the 2600 block of East Third Street had recently opened the store when a customer told her that the propane cage was open.

The lock was cut and the worker had no way to secure it, so she went back inside.

A man reportedly took one propane tank around 9:15 a.m. and a man took seven tanks around 11:30 a.m. It was not clear if it was the same man or two different people.

All 15 tanks were stolen by the time the worker was able to secure the cage. Video surveillance was only able to capture eight of the thefts.

A new filled tank costs $50, according to the report.

At Sammy’s Market, eight propane tanks were stolen.

Police responded to the 3500 block of East Third Street shortly before 6 p.m. and noted that the lock for the propane was also damaged.

It was not clear if the incidents were related.
