Riverside police exchanged gunfire with a person they were pursuing on Sunday evening.

The incident started with a report of a suspicious person with a gun near the Kroger store on Spinning Road, according to Riverside Police Chief Frank Robinson.

Adam Cottrill, 26, of Huber Heights was arrested after the pursuit.

After law enforcement officers responded to the Kroger about 4 p.m., the pursuit began.

The suspect fired at officers and officers fired back, Robinson said. Robinson said the officers used “less-lethal” weapons on the suspect, but wasn’t sure exactly what kind of less-lethal weapon was used.

The pursuit lasted under 10 minutes, according to call logs obtained by the Dayton Daily News from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department.

No one was injured during the incident and the pursuit ended when the suspect’s car crashed into a tree near Burkhardt and South Garland Avenue and then escaped into the woods, according to initial reports.

At least a dozen police cruisers and an agent from the federal office of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were on the scene. A suspect was seen being loaded into an ambulance and taken from the scene.

Robinson said he could not comment further because the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the investigation. “Since this involves our department, we wanted to have an outside agency handle the external and internal investigation,” Robinson said.

Cottrill is in custody at the Montgomery County Jail on a probation violation. He is also being held on possible charges of felonious assault and failure to comply with a police officer.

The sheriff’s office is not commenting at this time as the investigation is ongoing.
