Sheriff on officer-involved deadly shooting: ‘It was in defense of his own life’

Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a 43-year-old Dayton man Saturday afternoon they said struck a deputy with a vehicle in Harrison Twp.

The man killed previously was identified as Gary Brown, and the sheriff’s office on Thursday afternoon named the deputies involved as Matt Snyder and Alec Denker, who was the deputy who fired the shot at Brown.

“It was in defense of his own life,” Sheriff Rob Streck said.

The Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Kent Harshbarger on Thursday afternoon revealed that Brown died of a gunshot wound to the chest and ruled his death a homicide.

Denker and Snyder were immediately placed on administrative leave, which is procedure for officer-involved shootings.

The officer-involved shooting happened in the area of Ontario and LaCrosse avenues in Harrison Twp.
