Senior Master Sgt. Ryan Hart, operations superintendent for the 178th Security Forces Squadron, contacted authorities May 31 to report the stolen item, according to the incident report.
At the base, Master Sgt. Andrew Altstadt told authorities Monday that the weapon was stored with nine other shotguns in a locking cabinet and sealed with a red tag.
According to deputies, Altstadt said the seal on the cabinet may have had some “slack,” possibly allowing the suspect or suspects to break the seal, remove the shotgun then reapply the seal.
Altstadt told police he estimated 50 to 70 personnel would have been able to access the vault.
He also told police that approximately 30 personnel would have been able to access it without an escort.
