Police shot a dog Thursday evening after it attacked an officer.

A medic was called for the officer around 5:40 p.m. in the 200 block of North Western Avenue after he apparently fell backwards and hit his head.

We are working to find out whether the officer suffered injuries caused by the dog as well, and also whether that officer or his partner shot the dog.

The dog was reportedly hit in the shoulder area and also was in need of medical attention.

The Springfield Police Division would not say why officers were called to the home because it was an open police investigation.

Last month, Clark County deputies shot and killed a German shepherd mix after they said it ran toward them and acted aggressively.
