Suspect killed in officer-involved shooting in Indiana identified

UPDATE @ 10:05 p.m. (Jan. 13):

The suspect in the officer-involved shooting has been identified as Christopher A. Schmitt, 58, according to a release from the Indiana State Police.

When officers responded to the incident Saturday morning on Five Point Road, they were confronted by a man who pointed a firearm at them.

Officers then fired their weapons at the suspect, with at least one round hitting him.

Schmitt was transported to Margaret Mary Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased, the release stated.

The officers involved were Trooper Jordan Craig and Deputy Brian Weigel.

Trooper Craig is a three-year veteran with the Indiana State Police and Deputy Weigel is an officer with the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Department for over a year.

One person is dead Saturday following an officer-involved shooting.

The incident happened on Five Point Road, and all officers are OK, according to the Indiana State Police.

The names of the suspects and officers involved have not been released. It’s not clear what led to the shooting, which remains under investigation.
