Thanks to donation, K-9 Hugo will join Dayton police force

Thanks to a donation from the Matt Haverkamp Foundation, in partnership with Shiver Security, a new K-9 will join the Dayton Police Department.

Officer Randy Betsinger will be the K-9 handler for his new partner Hugo, a 15-month-old German shepherd. Beginning Monday they will attend the Shallow Creek training facility in Pennsylvania.

The $14,500 donation allowed the Dayton department to purchase Hugo, who will be trained in tracking and patrol as well as narcotics detection. The donation covers the cost of the dog and its training, according to Dayton police.

The Matt Haverkamp Foundation, named in memory of the Golf Manor, Ohio, police officer who died from injuries suffered in a car crash. The foundation continues Haverkamp’s legacy by supporting area law enforcement agencies. Since its inception in 2005, it has raised $450,000 to help purchase 57 police dogs.
