Two killed in Dayton shootings

Two men were shot and killed in unrelated incidents Monday, bringing the city’s homicide total for 2014 to five deaths.

Police said Tuesday that there is no connection between any of the cases and no indication of an upward trend in violence.

Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl said violent crime in the city is down significantly and noted that frigid temperatures so far in January have kept all crimes to a minimum. “The weather has certainly had an impact,” he said.

Detectives are still looking for answers in the two shooting deaths on Monday.

At about 3:30 p.m., 54-year-old Randy Tillman of Dayton was shot in the chest while sitting in a car near the intersection of Haberer and Burwood avenues. Police said they are investigating the incident as a possible drug deal gone bad.

“It appears he was waiting to conduct a drug transaction,” said Lt. Wendy Stiver.

A woman who was in the car with Tillman was detained and questioned about the incident, but was not in custody on Tuesday.

“At this time we are not going to comment on her role,” Stiver said.

At about 8 p.m., police were called to 431 Brightwood where 22-year-old Karll Williams was found shot to death on the front porch. A passerby had spotted his body on the porch and alerted the people inside the home.

“The victim went outside, for an unknown reason, and while he was outside, standing on the front porch, apparently someone came up to him and shot him,” said Dayton Police Sgt. Richard Blommel, head of the department’s homicide unit. No one inside the house heard anything, but a neighbor reported hearing a single gunshot.

A police report lists the time of the shooting as possibly 6:21 p.m. He was reportedly shot in the face.

Williams, who lives at that address, was engaged and has a young son with his fiance, according to his Facebook profile.

Stiver said detectives also are looking at possible drug connections in that case, but are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call their tip hotline at (937) 222-7867 or Detective Rod Roberts at (937) 333-1222.
