The scene in the 1400 block of Village Boulevard was eerily quiet, with no interruption from residents as officials cleaned the street covered with shattered glass from a white SUV window and bullet casings.
Police initially responded to the scene around 3 a.m.
According to police, the victim was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Kara, 27, a resident of Vue at 1400 apartments across the street, said the level of security at Ponte Verde doesn't seem to be well organized but is still surprised about the crime.
“I prefer my apartment complex because the security seems better,” said Kara, who requested her last name not be used. “But I’m shocked about the shooting. This is the most serious crime I’ve heard of while living in the neighborhood for two years.”
Kara said her friend lives at Ponte Verde, and for a while noticed that the security gates did not work.
“For a period of time the gates were open for anyone to drive through, but they recently fixed this problem,” Kara said.
Kara said the community at Ponte Verde is a diverse group of families, young professionals and retired persons.
The last reported shooting near the Villages community was in March 2015, when police found the body of 20-year-old Keonte Terrell in Waterside townhomes. Waterside is about a mile to the north of Ponte Verde apartments.
Anyone with information on a suspect is asked to contact West Palm Beach Police.
