The premium site is available exclusive to subscribers and designed to be more aligned with a print reading experience, said Q. McElroy, CMGO’s director of digital. The site has an uncluttered format that automatically adjusts to readers’ computer or mobile device screens, she said.
“This site in many ways is intended to be a bridge for our print subscribers, who are increasingly diving into the digital landscape because of the increasing use of smartphones and tablets,” McElroy said.
A free preview of MyDaytonDailyNews.com is available to all readers through June 4.
MyDaytonDailyNews.com will feature exclusive interactive content including dynamic photo galleries, data visualization components and video. “It allows us to add a dimension to our news coverage that you just can’t get in the newspaper,” said Jana Collier, Dayton Daily News editor in chief.
The premium site also will offer content not available on the free DaytonDailyNews.com, including military and investigative news sections, and “Ideas & Voices” opinions content. In addition, subscribers will have free access to the newspaper’s archives through the premium site.
Officials said the existing free site will continue to offer significant breaking news, weather, traffic and local events information. “There will be some content that only will be published in the printed newspaper and put on the premium site,” Collier said.
Collier said CMGO conducted extensive research into what readers want from a digital news source before launching MyDaytonDailyNews.com. The premium site, part of a national Cox initiative, was more than one year in development and represents a “major investment of resources,” she said.
The premium site is still under development and readers will continue to see new features added in the coming weeks and months, McElroy said.
