Steve Finke, deputy director of public works for the city, said the life of a bridge spans 75 to 100 years. The Helena Street bridge was built in 1925, making it 91 years old.
Finke said drivers will notice signs soon, giving them a couple weeks notice before Helena Street is shut down and the old bridge removed.
In total, the city’s spending has reached about $70 million, with 85 percent coming from outside sources such as federal and state grants. About 15 percent of the bridge money has been from local sources.
The first bridge completed in this program was the Findlay Street bridge in 2005. The Webster Street bridge downtown remains under construction.
