This is the first time in 20 years an evacuation of this kind took place at the center, said Clark County Juvenile Court Judge Joseph Monnin.
Thirteen of the juveniles were housed temporarily at the Clark County Jail while others were released to their homes with electronic monitoring devices, Monnin said.
“When you have to evacuate a correctional facility that is a situation that is an emergency and this is how county government works together,” said Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly.
Kelly was contacted around 7 p.m. and he and his staff cleared a pod in the jail for the juveniles to stay, he said.
Juvenile detention center workers helped deputies monitor the youth while they were housed in the jail, Kelly said.
According to state law, the juveniles housed in the jail were segregated from adult inmates, Monnin added.
Juvenile court hearings that were scheduled for Wednesday will be re-scheduled.
Columbia Gas shut off the heat source to the building when the leak was discovered Tuesday, but the lines that were leaking were linked back to lines run by the county, according to a release from Columbia Gas.
County crews worked through the day Wednesday repairing the line, and heat the to the building was restored around 4 p.m.
