Just after 8 a.m., a single vehicle crashed into a shed and a tree in the 4400 block of Middle Urbana Road.

A Graham pre-school teacher was killed early Wednesday morning when her car struck a tree on Middle Urbana Road.

Stacey Stoner, 29, was headed north on Middle Urbana north of Dallas Road shortly after 8 a.m., according to information from the Champaign County Sheriff's Office. Her 2005 Chevy went off the east side of the road, over-corrected and went off the west side of the road, striking a tree. Stoner, of County Line Road in Champaign County, was pronounced dead at the scene by Champaign County Coroner Josh Richards.

Wednesday was a difficult day for the district, said Norm Glismann, superintendent at Graham Local Schools. Stoner was a pre-school teacher who has worked for the district since 2007. While he did not know Stoner personally, Glismann said her loss was difficult for her co-workers.

Clergy and counselors are being made available to meet with students and staff members who may need to speak with someone, and parents with students in the pre-school were notified personally about the accident, Glismann said.

"The first move was to get them some support and help," he said.

Glismann and administrators also met with elementary school teachers in small groups and discussed the accident in a staff meeting. Beginning Monday, age-appropriate lessons on grief will be available to students in the elementary school as well.

Despite the tragedy, Glismann said he was proud of how the district's staff responded.

"Everybody in our district so far has really banded together," Glismann said. "You just never know when you leave the house if you are going to come back at the end of the day. It makes everyone think a little bit about how fragile we are."

According to information on her Facebook page, Stoner was a 2002 graduate of Northwestern High School and attended Urbana University and Wright State University.

Stoner was outgoing and respected by her co-workers, said Chad Miller, principal at Graham Elementary School.

"She's the kind of teacher I'd want my kids to have," Miller said.

The job is difficult at times, but Miller said Stoner always made sure her students enjoyed their time in class.

"Her kids were always doing fun things, but learning," Miller said.

This is not the first time the family has faced a similar tragedy. Stoner's brother, Steven Sherrock, was killed in a car crash on St. Paris Pike in 1999 when his 1995 Chevy Monte Carlo struck a utility pole. Sherrock was a 1996 Northwestern High School graduate.
