Officials said a guidance counselor discovered the weapon and said it was found inside a book bag in the locker.
The student was notified immediately of the discovery and his parents were called.
Scarberry said he does not know why the student brought the gun to school. He said he believes the student made a poor choice and now he has to face the consequences.
The student faced immediate suspension. According to the superintendent, the student may also face expulsion.
