How to protect yourself from listeriosis:

  • Thoroughly wash all fresh produce, including those with inedible skins, under running water for at least one minute.
  • Use a sanitized rush to scrub firm produce, such as melons.
  • Dry produce after cleaning.
  • Thoroughly cook raw meat.
  • Wash your hands before and after handling food.
  • Store food properly but know that listeria can grow in the refrigerator.
  • Clean refrigerator shelves and walls with soap and water.
  • Avoid restaurants with red flags like unclean food preparation surfaces, eating areas, salad bars and employees.
  • Be especially cautious with soft cheeses, hot dogs, deli meat and sprouts.
  • Discard contaminated food in a closed plastic bag.
  • Wash with soap and hot water all surfaces touched by contaminated food. If a dishwasher is unavailable sanitize after washing with one tablespoon chlorine bleach in a gallon of water.
