According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, Gerry Greenland, 54, of Grand River, used his 12,000-pound tractor to impale Sheriff Ben Boswell's vehicle Thursday afternoon when the sheriff and two other deputies responded to a call of a confrontation among family members.
Greenland, who was driving a John Deere 4250 tractor, confronted a sheriff's deputy on a driveway in Grand River, according to the news release. When the deputy swerved to avoid the tractor, Greenland aimed the vehicle at Boswell's Ford Explorer, which stopped on the grass next to the driveway.
Authorities said Boswell was not hurt, KCCI reported.
"The tines on that bale spear are over 3 feet long, so you can imagine the damage that could cause to a human if that made impact," Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation agent Adam DeCamp told KCCI.
Deputies took Greenland into custody after the tractor came to a stop, the television station reported.
