Judo Instructor Gets 10 Years In Underage Sex Case

A local Judo instructor who was accused of having a sexual relationship with an underage student will spend 10 years in prison.

Daniel Doyle, 33, of Spring Valley, was sentenced on Thursday morning.

He was accused of engaging in illicit sexual conduct with a teenage student of his between August 2003 and April 2007, including when coaching and chaperoning her at judo competitions around the world.

Doyle was immediately taken into custody. He pleaded guilty on Nov. 9 to one count of engaging in illicit sexual conduct in a foreign place. Doyle admitted videotaping the two of them engaged is sex on at least one occasion.

Doyle’s sentence also includes a fine of $15,000. Additional penalties include a $100 mandatory special assessment and forfeiture of certain video-making equipment.

Authorities said Doyle will be on supervised release for life at the conclusion of his prison term, and he will be required to register as a federal sex offender wherever he lives.

Judge Thomas M. Rose also ordered Doyle to have no contact with minors, either supervised or unsupervised, including mail or phone contact.

According to a statement of facts filed with the plea agreement, the victim started judo classes with Doyle in 1998 when she was about 8 years old. Doyle began a sexual relationship with the victim when she was no older than 14.
