New restaurant that serves that serves food on a 755-degree volcanic rock is now open

The new Black Rock Bar & Grill is officially open after several months of being in the works in front of the Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek.

The free-standing restaurant built on the site of the former Don Pablo’s restaurant next to Panera Bread in front of the mall opened at 11 a.m. on, Monday May 20.

The restaurant  serves steaks, seafood and other entrees on a 755-degree volcanic rock, allowing diners to cook their meals to their liking. Black Rock also features an assortment of appetizers, sandwiches and desserts, as well as a full-service bar that includes 17 craft beer taps and signature cocktails.

A ribbon-cutting and formal grand opening is in the works for the coming weeks, a spokeswoman for the Mall at Fairfield Commons said.

The new Black Rock Bar & Grill that has been in the works for several months in front of the Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek will open fully to the public Monday, May 20, at 11 a.m., according to a post on the restaurant's Facebook page today, May 18.

But it is also offering a “VIP event” for training purposes today, Saturday May 18, until 9 p.m., restaurant officials said.

“Join us today to see what the SIZZLE is all about!,” restaurant officials said about the eatery, which serves entrees on a 755-degree volcanic rock, allowing diners to cook their meals to their liking. Black Rock also features an assortment of appetizers, sandwiches and desserts, as well as a full-service bar that includes 17 craft beer taps and signature cocktails.

During today’s special VIP event, the full menu is available with a 50% off discount, excluding alcohol. Hours for the VIP event today are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and  4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The 280-seat restaurant will be the first in the Dayton area from Michigan-based Black Rock Bar & Grill, which operates a dozen  locations in Michigan and Florida and one in the Toledo area. The Fairfield Commons property formerly held a Don Pablo's Mexican restaurant, which closed its doors in September 2016 and was demolished last year to pave the way for construction of the new 8,200-square-foot restaurant.

In March, Black Rock officials said they would hire as many as 170 employees at the new restaurant.

Black  Rock Bar & Grill is seeking to hire as many as 170 employees for its new restaurant that is gearing up to open in the coming weeks in front of the Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek.

“We have started accepting applications, but have not started interviewing yet,” Jonathan Curtis, a regional manager for the new restaurant, told this news outlet. “We are hoping to start (interviewing) next week. Our goal for opening will be close to 170 team members.”

Applications are being accepted at www.bwjonesgrp.com. The Black Rock franchisee, Jones Group, also operates Buffalo Wild Wings restaurants outside Ohio.

Caleb Ward, spokesman for the Black Rock Bar & Grill franchise owners, said the restaurant’s founders “are hoping for a mid-April opening.”

“I don’t think you could ask for a better location,” Ward told this news outlet late last year of the Fairfield Commons space in Beavercreek.

Black Rock Bar & Grill serves entrees on a 755-degree volcanic rock, allowing diners to cook their meals to their liking. The entrees range from steaks, scallops and shrimp to hot dogs.

“The diversity of our menu is our strength,” Ward said. “And we serve everyone, whether you’re wearing a business suit to flip-flops. We cater to everybody.”

Mall at Fairfield Commons officials said in a release last year that Black Rock will offer a “unique dining experience” and will be “the perfect complement to the types of dining options that we are able to showcase to our visitors.”

The area in and around the Mall at Fairfield Commons has seen a surge in new-to-the-Dayton-market restaurants, including Giordano’s Chicago-style pizza and Flyby BBQ, which opened on the same day last month. Joining their ranks soon will be Jason’s Deli, which will open next door to Giordano’s across the street from the mall in the coming months.

In addition, El Toro Mexican Bar & Grill recently confirmed it will come to the North Fairfield Road corridor near the mall in the former Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant.
