In a distinctive blending of business concepts, a Kettering flag shop that already sells Ohio wines by the bottle alongside its Buckeye and Bengal flags and banners has applied for the state alcohol licenses that would allow it to serve wine and beer by the glass.

Although plans are still in their early stages, and the license applications are still pending, Creative Banners Flags & Poles at 1006 E. Dorothy Lane in Kettering plans to serve a broad array of Ohio wines alongside beers from Ohio wineries that have breweries starting perhaps as early as next spring, according to Doug Kurtz, the shop's sales director.

A name change for the business will likely accompany the changes, but the new name has not yet been chosen, Kurtz said.

Plans call for offering a Friday night happy hour and Saturday “meet the winemaker” events that will spotlight wineries here in the Miami Valley and from other regions of Ohio. There are local wineries in Clark, Greene, Warren, Butler, Preble, Miami and Darke counties.

“We want this to be a fun place for people to meet and have a glass of Ohio wine or beer,” Kurtz said. “My philosophy is, if I promote Ohio wineries and the families that run them, it will boost awareness. I want people to go visit those wineries. I’d like to see more local restaurants carry Ohio wines.”

The flag shop started selling Ohio wines by the bottle for carry-out in February 2018, and now stocks wines from 16 Ohio wineries.

“It's really taking off,” Kurtz said. “We are seeing a lot of repeat customers. Basically, it's just a matter of getting the word out that their local flag store is now also specializing in Ohio wines.”

The family-owned business sells flags, flag poles, and accessories for residential and commercial use. The original business was called Creative Signs, which sold business signs and advertising supplies. With a rising customer demand for flags in the 1980s, the name became Creative Signs & Flags. A surge in interest in advertising banners and in the hobby of flying kites resulted in the next name change to Creative Banners Flags & Kites. With interest in flagpoles ascending in recent years, the owners changed the business name to Creative Banners Flags & Poles.
