Kroger has ‘no plans to close’ Sugarcreek Twp. store

Grocer planning remodel, new fuel center for store within 2 miles of future Cornerstone Marketplace

Kroger has “no plans to close” its store at 6480 Wilmington Pike in Sugarcreek Twp. even after a new Kroger Marketplace store is built at the nearby Cornerstone of Centerville development, according to a spokeswoman for the grocery chain.

The new Kroger planned at Cornerstone would be less than two miles north of the Sugarcreek Twp. store and less than two miles east of another Kroger store at 2100 Whipp Road in Kettering. Kroger officials have previously said no decision had been made about the future of any stores surrounding Cornerstone.

Kroger has submitted plans to Sugarcreek Twp. officials for an extensive remodeling of the store, and also is proposing to build a fuel center in front of the grocery store, along Wilmington Pike.

Sugarcreek Twp. Administrator Barry Tiffany said township officials are “very happy that Kroger is doing this,” and said the renovation plans will result in “a more upscale” store. He projected the total investment of both the renovation and fuel center projects could reach $8 million to $10 million. The company’s plans as submitted to the township call for creating two entrances to the store rather than one, and substantially reconfiguring the store’s interior.

Kroger spokeswoman Rachael Betzler declined to discuss specifics of the renovation project, citing a zoning hearing on the fuel-center proposal scheduled for Thursday.

But Betzler added, “There are no plans to close the Sugarcreek store even with a new store in future plans at Cornerstone.”

The Sugarcreek store, Betzler said, was opened in 1994, and underwent a minor remodel in 2005.
