Latest Dayton homicide victim shot multiple times

The cause of death for Thomas Hammett, 34, is multiple gunshot wounds and manner of death was homicide, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

Ron Waker, of Oakwood, is the property manager. He was called at 5 a.m. by a neighboring tenant and told about the fatal shooting.

Waker said there have been shootings before at his properties, but never a homicide. He said just a few months ago there was a fatal drug overdose in the same apartment.

“I’m used to drama; I own a couple hundred units and on a daily basis I have headaches,” Waker said.

The current tenant, Micala Knight, 23, has lived there since June. She’s now in Montgomery County Jail on an outstanding warrant for child restraint.

In the 911 call, Knight said her door was kicked in by two suspects dressed in all black.

The victim in this shooting has been identified as 34-year-old Thomas Hammett, according to Montgomery County Coroner’s Office. His last known address was in Dayton.

An autopsy is underway to determine the cause and manner of death.

UPDATE @ 6:40 a.m.

Investigators said a man who was shot and killed on Winters Street early Friday morning was not a resident of the apartment.

Police said the victim, who has not been identified, was visiting a woman when two or three men broke in and shot him, according to Sgt. Mike Godsey with Dayton police.

Investigators are not sure if the man was targeted, and other details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation.

The woman was able to run out of the apartment to a neighbor’s residence and call 911.

UPDATE @ 4:50 a.m.

Dayton police said a man has died following a shooting on Winters Street Friday morning.

The call was first reported to police as a burglary in progress around 3:45 a.m. Neighbors reported three people broke into the house, followed by hearing several gunshots.

The victim, a man who was the occupant of the house, was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police do not have any suspect information at this time.

According to police scanner traffic, the shooting on Winters Street was first reported as a burglary in progress.

The caller reported to the 911 operator that two people broke into the house around 3:45 a.m. The caller ran out of the house, but reported hearing several shots according to initial reports.

A shooting has been reported in the 400 block of Winters Street in Dayton.

The incident was reported just before 4 a.m.

Initial reports indicate that medics have been requested to the scene. Officers on the scene found a victim.
