TROY — The assistant superintendent of Troy City Schools resigned a week after another candidate was selected as the district’s new superintendent.

Jeremy A. Miller was one of two finalists for the district superintendent position that was filled April 16 with the board of education hiring of Christopher Piper, currently superintendent of the Triad Local Schools.

Miller submitted a letter dated April 23 to Mark Barhorst, district Human Resources director, stating he would resign effective at the end of his contract July 31. The letter is time stamped as received April 25.

Miller was hired in June 2016 to fill the assistant position that had been vacant for several years.

“I believe I have served the Troy City Schools well during my time there, but I feel it is the best interest of my family and myself for me to head in a different direction,” Miller wrote. “I was certainly disappointed in the outcome of the superintendent hiring process, but I believe that will end up being a blessing to me.”

Miller came to the district from the Centerville City Schools, where he was director of curriculum, instruction and assessment. In the letter, he said had concluded he needed to be more involved with his family and would seek a position closer to home.

“I wish the best for the Troy City Schools and hope you understand this decision is best for my family,” Miller said.

Current Troy Superintendent Eric Herman notified the board in January he would retire at the end of July. He has been superintendent since 2011.

Miller is no longer with the district, Herman said Friday.

Board of Education President Doug Trostle said Thursday the board is directly responsible for hiring the superintendent and the district treasurer.

“Since the central office has functioned in the past without an assistant superintendent, I do not believe there is an urgency to fill this position until our new superintendent has time to meet with all of our administrators and assess what our district and its staff needs to help them continue to meet the educational needs of our students,” Trostle said.
