Related: Northmont’s Academic Challenge team wins title
In the preliminary matches, Northmont posted a 4-1 record. The team defeated Triumph Academy, Roeper Middle School, Emerson Middle School and Smith Middle School. They lost to Detroit Country Day.
The team qualified for the NAQT Middle School National Championship Tournament in Dallas in May 2017.

Samantha Street was the third-highest scoring player in the tournament out of 123 individuals.
This is the first time in school history that the Middle School Academic Challenge team has qualified for the National Championship Tournament. The team is coached by high school advisor David Jones, Northmont Senior Kara Combs and Northmont graduate Emily Bingham.
