Local gunsmiths oppose new rules

President Barack Obama is taking executive action on gun control, and while some say his plan is an important step, he is still drawing criticism from both sides.

NewsCenter 7’s Kate Bartley was in Trotwood today at Spence Gunsmithing, a local gun store, where the owner, Ryan Spence, said the new rules won’t change his life at all.

Spence Gunsmithing logs every person who comes through their door. They do background checks on everyone who buys a gun.

But Spence says he’s still unhappy with Obama’s plan because he sees it as a way for the government to essentially have a gun registry on everyone who owns a gun.

Critics on the other side are upset because Obama’s plan will not require background checks on all gun sales, such as those between friends.

Bartley will have more on this story starting at 5 p.m. on WHIO-TV including how these laws will be enforced and putting more money into mental health treatment.
