“This coveted award affirms the hard work of educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content,” Wayne Local Schools said in a statement. Superintendent Pat Dubbs added his “congratulations to Principal Tammy Burchfield and all staff members for all their hard work and dedication to the success of every child at Wayne Local Schools.”
Waynesville Elementary serves 648 students in grades K-5. The school’s motto states that “We are small enough to really know our students, and that gives them big opportunities!”

The other Ohio winners were schools in Miamitown, Dublin, Pickerington, Akron, North Canton, Macedonia and Steubenville. On Nov. 6-7, the U.S. Department of Education will celebrate with all honorees at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.

You have much to teach us: some of you personalize student learning, others engage parents and communities in the work and life of your local schools and still others develop strong and forward-thinking leaders from among your teaching staff.”
