A doctor was shot to death Monday afternoon, and the shooter apparently shot himself to death in what Massillon police are investigating as a murder-suicide, according to media reports from Massillon in Stark County.

Police Chief Keith Moser told CBS affiliate WOIO-TV that Dr. George Seese was leaving Affinity Medical Center and getting into his car in the afternoon when a man, later identified as 50-year-old Michael Wood, approached him in the parking lot and opened fire with a handgun at close range.

Here’s what we know about the apparent murder-suicide in Massillon:

Doctor targeted. Moser said the doctor was targeted specifically. Seese, a cardiologist, was struck at least twice and later died. "He would have been almost right up on top of him," Moser said. Officials say the two men involved had a mutual love interest.

Shooter takes own life. Wood was found dead from self-inflicted injuries near his vehicle, according to Massillon police.

How the hospital reacted. A "code silver" was issued at Affinity Medical Center when police first responded to the reported shooting. A "code silver" is defined as either a combative patient with a lethal weapon is on the loose or a violent situation is unfolding and lock down is in place.

Schools go on lockdown. Massillon City Schools were also put on lockdown during the shooting. The school district issued this statement on social media yesterday: "The safety of our students and staff is always our number one priority. This afternoon, the Massillon Police Department notified us that there was a safety concern within the community. The Massillon City School District took immediate action and placed each building in lock down for precautionary measures. Police have now notified us that it is safe to come out of lock down. In no circumstance were any of our students or staff in jeopardy. The incident was not on school property. Again, the safety of our students and staff is our number one priority."

Isolated incident. Police determined the shooting was an isolated incident and "there was no threat to any other workers or patients in the hospital."
