Huber Heights Mayor Jeff Gore has decided to tape off the public playgrounds in his city to further encourage social distancing.

Earlier this week, Gov. Mike DeWine ordered all public playgrounds closed to stop the spread of coronavirus, but not everyone has listened.

Gore posted on Facebook that when the weather was nice this week he saw many children and their parents on the playgrounds and it worried him.

“I’m an extremely social person myself and I hate not being around my friends and at work at Wayne but I’m doing what’s been asked by the governor and Dr. Acton and am asking all of you to please do the same,” his post said. “We are in a situation now where our decisions can have a direct impact on others in our community.”

The coronavirus can live on surfaces for up to 24 hours, health experts say.

DeWine issued a stay-at-home order that started last Monday, but parks are still open during this time and people are encouraged to get outside, just not share park equipment. Walking, biking, and hiking are among the outside activities deemed safe.

Gore ended his post urging adult residents to talk with their children about social distancing and their impacts on others.

“I firmly believe that as soon as we all do our part the sooner we get out of this and get back to some sense of normalcy,” Gore said.

The city of Fairborn has also taped off the playground equipment and swings at its parks.
