BAE layoffs spike to nearly 600 people

WEST CHESTER TWP. — More than 600 people have lost their jobs at BAE Systems since March as the company said last week it will lay off an additional 130 workers over the next several months.

“As a company, BAE Systems works very hard to secure new business and maintain steady rates of employment. Unfortunately, as we move closer to completing some key, long-standing defense contracts which are coming to an end, we likewise must continue to adjust and align our Butler County work force with existing customer needs and production requirements,” said Jennifer Robinson, spokeswoman for BAE Systems.

The latest round of cuts comes after the armoring company announced it let go 180 full-time employees effective April 13. In March, BAE slashed 300 contractor jobs, which brings the local layoff total to 610 employees.

The layoffs stem mostly from the wind-down of several major contracts for BAE, including one to arm the Army’s Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles, to the Oshkosh Co. Workloads also have been affected by the U.S. military’s announcement it would halt purchasing new armored Humvee vehicles, the company said.

With this newest round of eliminations, BAE Systems’ employee level is at 1,190 workers, still above levels required for the Enterprise Zone Agreement through West Chester Twp., according to township officials.
