BBC camera crew films conjoined Galyon twins

Dayton natives to be featured in documentary about the human body.

DAYTON — As the world’s oldest living conjoined twins enjoyed one of the nation’s oldest pastimes Sunday, June 20, a British Broadcasting Corp. camera crew recorded them for a documentary about the human body.

The BBC is filming a four-part series about the marvel of the human organism, and 58-year-old Dayton residents Donnie and Ronnie Galyon will appear in the third episode, which will cover “all of the complexities it takes to create another human being,” said Emma Pound, a BBC researcher.

“They figure into it because when a fertilized egg starts dividing, and if it’s going to divide into twins, it divides at certain points, which is before day No. 9 of gestation,” Pound said. “If it hasn’t divided by day No. 9, and it still tries to divide into twins, it won’t divide entirely and that’s when you get a conjoined twin.”

The BBC, which likely will air the show in the U.S. on the TLC channel in the summer of 2011, helped arrange for Donnie and Ronnie to attend the Dayton Dragon’s game on Father’s Day to capture some footage of the pair watching a game they love. But a free trip to the game wasn’t all the twins received to participate in the documentary: The British media group also made a donation to the Galyon family to help fund the expansion of the home belonging to Ronnie and Donnie’s younger brother, Jimmy.

With the help of Christian Youth Corps Inc., a charity group, Jimmy is doubling the size of his Beavercreek home to create a living space that can accommodate his older brothers and their unique needs.

Jimmy, who has taken care of his brothers for more than 20 years, is eager for them to move into his expanded home, which will feature numerous hand bars, and doorways and hallways wide enough to fit their specially designed wheelchair.

“At this point in their lives, when they can’t be on their own, I’ll feel better with them in our home,” Jimmy said.
