CENTERVILLE

City names crime prevention officer

John Davis, with the Centerville Police Department since 1992, has been named the Ohio crime prevention association practitioner of the year. Davis has worked as the community relations officer since 2012. He has organized the citizen’s police academy, the Noon Optimist Bicycle Rodeo and youth CSI camps. Davis works in crime prevention and crime analysis.

Kettering releases construction update

The Woodman Drive asphalt paving should conclude on June 14. Stroop Road is under construction near Wilmington Pike. Joint repair work has been completed, and the final surface paving should wrap up mid June. Work on Stroop Road, near Dorothy Lane, was expected to begin in early June.

Rosewood offers summer art camps

Rosewood Arts Center, 2655 Olson Dr., is offering week-long camps in fashion design, comic books, architecture and charcoal drawing. One-day camps include clay day, candy making, screen printing and more. Camps will be held through Aug. 5. The one-day camp costs $35 for residents and $45 for nonresidents. Half day week-long camps cost $85 for residents and $95 for nonresidents. Full day week-long camps cost $150 for residents and $160 for nonresidents. Kettering parks final running for award

The Kettering Parks, Recreational & Cultural Arts Department is a finalist in the 2014 National gold Medal Awards for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. The award honors communities that show excellence in long-range planning, volunteering, program development and environmental stewardship. Kettering has been nominated four years in a row.

Young scientists meet today

Aspiring young scientists are invited to meet with Mrs. G. from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. June 12 at the Wright Memorial Public Library, 1776 Far Hills Ave. The program is geared toward infants, toddlers and preschoolers and helps kids explore the five senses.

Wonder kids to conduct experiments

Kids ages kindergarten through third grade are invited to Wright Memorial Public Library, 1776 Far Hills Ave., at 10:30 a.m. June 16. Mrs. G will lead budding scientists in conducting experiments with everyday objects.

Heartsaver class June 19

A heartsaver course will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. June 19. The class is geared toward people required to have certification, but who are not certified or licensed. The class will cover infant, child and adult CPR. The cost is $35, and includes a book. Checks should be made payable to the Washington Twp. Firefighters Association. Nature trails mark grand opening

The Washington-Centerville Public Library and the Centerville-Washington Park District are celebrating the grand opening of the Nature Literature Trail, funded by the Yeck Family Foundation. The grand opening will be held at 10 a.m. June 14 on the Tree Trek route in Bill Yeck Park, 8798 Rooks Mill Lane.

Owlexander’s Hoot Route is located in Grant Park, 501 Normandy Ridge Road, and Owlexander’s Wetland Walk is located in Oak Creek South Park, 790 Miamisburg Centerville Road. The effort emphasizes literacy skills and learning about the local eco system as a family event.
