Business partners open new tavern in Waynesville

Mike Fullenkamp and Dan Apolito have been partnering together in the restaurant business for several years. Since opening Archer’s Tavern in Centerville in 2010, they have worked together to build a successful restaurant and bar that locals flock to nightly.

On the heels of this success story, Fullenkamp and Apolito recently opened The Stone House Tavern in downtown Waynesville, the only full service restaurant in town offering a complete bar that features many varieties of craft beers as well.

What they do: "We offer an American style menu and are already becoming known for our burgers, wings and fish tacos," said General Manager Billy Fantaci. "We also have sauerkraut balls we make in house and people seem to really like them."

Besides the full bar, the Stone House Tavern serves lunch and dinner daily and opens at 11 a.m. (noon on Sundays).

An outdoor patio was added to the original building and Stone House will also feature live music in the spring, according to Fullenkamp.

“There is hardly ever a bad weather day on the patio,” he said. “We have heaters and the way the patio sits, it gets a nice breeze. There is also a great view from the patio.”

How the business started: Fullenkamp and Apolito were approached by their now business partners, John Purdam and Tom Bensman, who own the stone building on South Main Street in Waynesville. The building had been a retail store and had been empty for a few years.

“John told us he liked the way we did business at Archer’s,” Fullenkamp said. “We ended up talking with them about turning their building into a restaurant and worked out a deal to manage it.”

Located in a stone building that was originally built in 1992, the Stone House Tavern has served customers since September of 2012.

“The building only looks old,” Fullenkamp said. “And the part that has the bar and kitchen are new. That was added before we opened.”

The original building features a large fireplace and the restaurant has a seating capacity of 90 inside and an additional 75 on the patio.

Future plans: The Stone House Tavern has not been heavily advertised so according to Fullenkamp, the goal is to "get our name out there." The business works hard to support the Waynesville Community by offering team dinners to Waynesville Schools sports teams and they participated in the annual Sauerkraut Festival, introducing visitors to the new restaurant.

“We’d like to add special events eventually,” Fullenkamp said. “We have talked about car shows, and grill out events.”

Contact information: The Stone House Tavern is located at 258 S. Main Street in downtown Waynesville. Phone: (513) 855-4203.
