A 9-year-old boy riding a bicycle was struck by a dump truck this afternoon on state Route 219 in the village of Coldwater.

Police and medics were called around 3:45 p.m. to the intersection of West main Street and Rose Drive. The boy, whose name and condition were not available, was taken to Mercer Health, and from there a CareFlight medical helicopter took him to Dayton Children’s Hospital.

Coldwater police reported that the boy, who was wearing a helmet, ran the stop sign at the intersection and was struck by a dump truck driven by Thomas Ailes of Anna.

Coldwater resident Chris Zibridi, who is a father, said he hates hearing about accidents involving young kids.

“You think about how terrible that must be for their family and friends and what they are going through. You obviously think about your own kids, giving them the right direction, to look both ways,” he said.

The accident is a reminder to always be alert on the road for children and adults, Zibrida said.

“It’s so important for drivers to be more attentive because kids are kids and things happen,” he said.
